•Vitamins are smaller biomolecules, required in small amount, for normal functioning of the body and provide resistance against some diseases.

•They act as coenzymes in several enzyme dependent metabolic reactions. Vitamins are generally synthesized in plants and animals are not able to synthesise vitamins in their body (their are some exceptions).

•Vitamins are taken with food but these are not hydrolysed like other food matters. Excess vitamins are either excreted or metabolically denatured.

•Only a little quantity of Vitamin is sufficient for proper functioning.

•Vitamins can be classified into two types - fat soluble vitamins and water soluble vitamins.

•Their deficiency causes several different diseases in our body like scurvy, Night blindness etc.
