➡️ ANSWER

A wave is a physical phenomenon characterized by its frequency, wavelength, and amplitude.

In general, waves transfer energy from one location to another, in which case they have a velocity.

Answer:

Wave:

  • It is a kind of disturbance in which energy is transfer from 1 particle to another particle without actual migration.
  • For ideal wave motion medium must be elastic & have inertia.

Types of Waves:-

1). Mechanical Waves:

  • It is the wave which require medium for their propagation is called mechanical waves.
  • Ex - Water waves, Sound Waves & Waves in spring.

Mechanical waves has 2 parts:

A). Longitudinal waves:

  • If the vibration of particles are along the direction of propagation is called longitudinal wave.
  • Ex - Sound Wave.
  • Compression and rarefaction are the characteristics of longitudinal wave.
  • Rarefaction: It is the region where particles are far apart called rarefaction. In rarefaction density is minimum.
  • Compression: It is the region where particles are close to each other. In compression density is maximum.

B). Transverse waves:

  • If the vibration of particles are perpendicular to direction of propagation is called transverse wave.
  • Ex - Wave produce in string.
  • Crest and trough are characteristics of transverse wave.
  • Crest: Maximum displacement from mean position is called crest (Upper half).
  • Trough: Trough is a opposite of crest i.e. lower half of wave.

2). Matter waves:

  • It is the wave which produce by motion of microscopic particles like proton, electron is called matter waves.

3). Electromagnetic waves:

  • It is the wave which do not require medium for their propagation is called electromagnetic waves.
  • Ex - UV waves, Radio waves and Heat waves.
