A weed is a plant considered undesirable in a particular situation, "a plant in the wrong place". Examples commonly are plants unwanted in human-controlled settings, such as farm fields, gardens, lawns, and parks.

They rob soil moisture and nutrients from the competing crop and decrease harvest efficiencies. Weeds also compete with the crop for sunlight. Because they are plants competing to survive in a limited space, weeds are actively removing nutrients from the soil to grow taller, stronger and healthier each day.

The two mechanical control techniques most often used are tillage and mowing. Biological weed control refers to any technique that involves the use of natural enemies of weed plants to control the germination of weed seeds or the spread of established plants.
