Western Cyclonic Disturbances

  • The Western Cyclonic Disturbances are weather spectacles of the winter months which are brought in by the flow of wester from the Mediterranean region. The western cyclonic disturbance is an extra-tropical storm which carries winter rain to the northwestern parts of the Indian subcontinent.

  • The western cyclonic disturbances originated in the Mid-latitude region which is near the Atlantic Ocean and Europe.

  • The low pressure generally forms over the Mediterranean Sea and it travels over Iran, Iraq, Afghanistan and Pakistan before entering India it gets loaded with moisture. In India, they mostly impact the weather of the north and north-western regions.

  • During the season of winter, a high-pressure system is developed in the regions around Ukraine which results in the cold air from polar regions colliding with the somewhat warm and moist air at lower temperate and latitudes.

  • Western Disturbances are the reason for the extensive winter and pre-monsoon season rainfall across North-West India.
