In othwr states he is elected indirectly that is by the members of the gram panchayat. The sarpanch signs important documents and co-ordinates the activities of the panchayat.There are also many women sarpanch who have also taken up responsibilities in panchayats. Sarpanchs of the gram panchayats of the area are equal to 1/5 of the total members of the total members of the panchayat samiti taken by rotation or by lottery.
