Pururva want to bring down the river Narmada to earth so that whole world becomes liberated from its sins. Pururva did an austere penance to lord Shiva. When Lord Shiva came before him, Pururva declared his wish that Narmada to come down the earth.
Shiva instructed Narmada to descend down to earth but she told him that she needed a base for that to happen. Lord Shiva then ordered the Vindhyachala son’s parayanka mountain to carry Narmada while she come down to earth. These are the blessing Lord Shiva gives to Narmada.
