What can a Historian derive from surveys?

They can only know the important things from official letters, newspapers,etc. Those records only tell about main incidents, not the actual mind set of people

But if they look deeper into the matter, by surveys of villages , they may find the mind sets of people in those days.

To the historians, archeological surveys are important because it deals with the past. A historian can come across certain information like – the ancient civilizations, the behaviors of human beings in the past, structure of the society, the culture and the traditions, habits and their livelihood. Historian can derive many of the things from the surveys like they can write history of that time and know more about the country of that time
