traces of organisms become sometime preserved in a rock as Fossil. Hard parts, such as shells n bones, have better chance of becoming Fossil than the soft parts. Paleontologist can study fossils in the rock layer. Sedimentary rocks are the only type of the rock that contains Fossil. fossils give us a great deal of information. They tell us about the environment when the sediments were deposited. They also tells us about the organisms and climate that existed in the past...

with mountains there can be metamorphic rocks and some are foliated which means that the rock has layers. so with the many layers that the rocks hold sciencetist can figure out how old the rock is. Meaning that they are able to roughly figure out how old a mountain is.
