The best thing you can do is make your parents proud.
Now, there are two types of people in front of whom you make your parents proud. Namely,
Relatives
Colleagues (friends, neighbours, coworkers)
As in an Indian background, in front of relatives and colleagues, these are the things you can do or could have done to make your parents proud -
For boys :
Excel in studies (preferably the topper so that there's something they can brag about)
Excel in sports (there are inter school, inter city, inter state etc tournaments for cricket, badminton, table tennis, chess and nowadays football too)
Have a sense of speech (talking sensibly in front of people in whatsoever topic it may be really makes your parents proud)
Have a sense of style (suiting the type of event, flaunt your wardrobe collection for the best outfit)
Bath daily (sarcastic but true)
Do you best to earn money to live a more lavish life than your parents have lived.
Share your salary/profit/income/earnings first with your parents than for yourself and anybody else.
Now many of the points are common for both men and women.
Here are some other things women can do -
Cooking (no matter how liberal or how modern your upbringing might be, but this is one thing that makes your parents proud)
Look beautiful (now, beauty is not something which can be seen but observed)
Be strong (by strong I don't mean physically, but emotionally)
Have a rich and smart husband
Have children
But at the bottom of the facts there lies the most important fact that our parents really feel happy about, that is you being happy and successful in your life.
Your parents doesn't expect anything from you but commitment to them, love for them and care for them, and they wouldn't even mind if you buy them stuff, send them on holidays, go on holidays with them, take care of their health and the most important thing - ' Look after them when they grow old '.
