rusting of iron in presence of air (oxygen and water ) is called oxidisation .
when the iron is in contact with oxygen and water , iron molecules react with oxygen molecules to give iron oxide . This is the reaction . that is why we don't traces of brown coloured layers called as rust .
we can prevent the rusting of iron by :
• galvanisation is a method of coating zinc on iron surface which prevents the contact of water and oxygen with iron. zinc is also called sacrificial metal .
