1. Composting
Water helps break down your compost and aid in decomposition. Luckily, you don’t need filtered or tap water for this purpose — rainwater does the trick.
2. Landscaping and Gardening
Think about it: rain is already the natural provider of water for your plants and trees — collecting it will make it more accessible to be used in watering cans or indoor plants.
If you don’t have a rain catchment system, you can also plant beds at the end of your driveway or bottom of a hill, where rainwater will naturally run off.
3. Pets & Animals
Rainwater is typically safe for animals to consume, including livestock. You can also use rainwater for birdbaths or to bathe your pets.
Just be sure you have established a clean and safe way to collect water before giving it to animals.
4. Produce Rinse
Rainwater is also a perfect vegetable and fruit rinse. If you’re a gardener, you can take the produce straight from your garden to your very own rinse bath.
5. Cars and Equipment
Next time your car needs a wash, or you want to clean up your lawn mower, use rainwater. It’s also perfect for garden equipment, bikes, tractors, trailers and most equipment found in your garage or shed.
8. Flushing Toilets
Place a bucket of rainwater next to your toilet, and next time you’re ready to flush, pour water into the bowl. Your toilet will automatically flush with the added liquid.
Your bucket should hold the same volume of liquid as your toilet tank.
9. Powerwashing
For cleaning windows, porches, decks or the exterior of your home, consider using rainwater as an alternative to hose water. Rainwater is considered “soft water” so there is no risk of damaging paint or windows.
