Dussehra or Vijayadashami is celebrated to mark the triumph of good over evil. It is an important Hindu festival celebrated with much pomp and show. The effigy of Ravana is burnt with crackers to end the evil from our mind and soul. It also marks the end of the nine day festival also known as 'Navratri'.

The reason behind the beginning of such festival differs according to states. The south-east and north-east states consider Vijayadashami as the end of Durga puja wherein goddess Durga won the battle with Mahishasura, the demon, to protect the universe from evil powers. On the other hand, in north and eastern states, the Dussehra festival is celebrated to mark the victory of Lord Rama over Ravana. Thus, Ramlila or dramatic representation of Rama’s life is performed by the artist.

The Dussehra day commences with prayers and religious chanting. Hindus believe in the application of tika on the forehead before starting any religious activities.

The Dussehra festival ends with the burning of Ravana’s 10 head which symbolizes ten pessimistic qualities, which a human possesses and should be burnt in the fire of wisdom.
