This site belongs to the Sangam period: “the period in the history of ancient Tamil Nadu (known as the Tamilakam) spanning from c. 3rd century BC to c. 3rd century AD. It is named after the famous Sangam academies of poets and scholars* centered in the city of Madurai.”
It is one a number of Indian ports that traded with the Mediterranean world, via the Red Sea and Egypt, and in which there are plenty of Roman artefacts (as should be expected). (I recognise some as of a type found by Petrie in Egypt).
