In 1856,the enfield rifle was introduced in the army.The cartridges of this rifle were smeared with grease and covered with caps,which had to be bitten off before use.The sepoys believed that the grease was made from the fat of animals which would hurt the religious sentiments of both, the Hindus and the Muslims.So, they refused to use them.On 29th March, 1857, Mangal Pandey, of the 34th Infantry at Barrackpore, called upon his fellow sepoys to revolt against the use of new cartridges. He was arrested and hanged on 8th April, 1857.

- Economic cause: The upper class and peasants were not happy with the oppressive policies of the British towards Indians.
- Military cause: Sepoys were not happy with the British policy because of the rank policy which means Indians can only hold the post of subedar which is the highest post for the Indians under the British which made the sepoys angry with the British.
- Social cause: The British were continuously interfering in the Indian social norms such as banning the Sati system and widow remarriage.
