1. Politics in India was dominated by 1 party both at the center and state level.

2. In the states ruled by a party different from the union government , the power of the states were undermined (less).

3. The Central government missused it's power to impose president rule in a state.

After 1990s

  1. The Center and majority of state government belong to different political parties.
  2. This period saw the rise of many regional parties.

Before 1990s, there were only few parties which formed governments at the centre and at the state levels. When rival parties formed the Government at the state level, the Central Government tried to misuse its powers by dismissing the State Governments. This weakened the federal spirit of our constitution. Power sharing between centre and state more effective today because of the emergence of many regional parties in different states. Explanation:
