There are several changes in uterus if the fertilization doesn't occur - At first the ovum released by the ovary starts degenerating. In the sequence of degenerating the the corpus luteum of the ovum releases .

The uterine wall thickens that is richly supplied with blood and becomes spongy. A special tissue called placenta develops which connects embryo to the uterine wall that provides nutrients and oxygen to it.
