Division based on family status is called chathurvarnya system.People were divided into four groups.Bhraman,kshathriya,shudhra ana vaishya.Bhramins were pastors.
Kshathriya's duty was to serve people (king) and destruction of enemies.
shudhra's work was cattle rearing and trade.Vaishya were servants.This system was a typical example of inequality prevailed in ancient times.

The Varna Based Society resulted into the emergence of caste system..Smaller casts came into existence and became the base to organize the society. These smaller casts are known to be Jatis (hindi- जाति)
