In early 1920s, national flag discussion gained attention. In 1921 gandhi wrote in his journal about need for an Indian flag. His proposal was charka on red nd green banner. The spinning wheel idea was proposed by Lala hansraj . Then Gandhiji commissioned venkaya to design a flag with spinning wheel. Gandhiji wanted to present it in Congress session 1921. But due to late delivery it got delayed and also Sikh group wanted to include black colour.

Finally in 1929 Gandhiji moved towards a secular interpretation stating

Red for sacrifice of people

White for purity

Green for hope
