Answer:

When both raisin and RBC placed inside a hypotonic solution both gains water and start swelling up .

It happens due to the less concentration of water inside the raisin and RBC as compared to the concentration of water outside region of the raisin and RBC.

When raisin and RBC are placed inside a hypotonic solution, water enters them by the process of endosmosis. This leads to the swelling up and finally bursting of cell.

  • It is because hypotonic solution refers to a solution having a lower concentration of solute( and so a higher amount of water) and so the solute concentration inside the RBC or raisin is greater than the solution( and water content is less). As a result of this, water enters into the cells to maintain osmolarity.
  • Water enters into the raisin and RBC, thereby leading to a swelled up structure.
  • The RBC does not have any cell wall to maintain rigidity so continuous entry of water leads to hemolysis of RBC( rupture or destruction of cells).
