 1. It is a tropical as well as a sub-tropical crop.

 2.  It grows well in hot and humid climate.

 3.  It requires a temperature between 21°C to 27°C and an annual rainfall between 75 and 100 cm.

 4.  Irrigation is required in regions receiving low rainfall.

   By-products:

1.   It is the main source of sugar, gur (jaggery), khandsari and molasses.
