Anomalous properties of water -

Many properties of water are quite different from those expected from those of other liquids

Range of anomalous properties of water

1. Rationale for the low temperature anomalies of liquid water - hydrogen bonds are present in water molecules . If hydrogen bonds are not present in water it behaves non anomalousy.

2. Water phase anomalies - water has unusually high b.p, unusually high m.p .

3. Water density anomalies - water shrinks on melting water has a low coefficient of expansion.

4. Water material anomalies -no aqueous solution is ideal. The electrical conductivity of water rises to a considerably with frequency.

5. Water physical anomalies - water has unusually high viscosity, water has unusually high surface tension. Large diffusion decreases as the temperature is lowered.
