Formed by the reaction of sulfur dioxide and oxygen in the presence ofcatalysts, sulfur trioxide fumes vigorously in contact with moist air and dissolves in water, liberating much heat and forming sulfuric acid. Whensulphur reacts with oxygen, it formssulphur dioxide.
