because the poet was mesmerized by the snake that secretly came into his trough to drink water. the poet did not want to disturb the snake from drinking even he was waiting to get water from that trough. he really liked by the appearance of the snake. but at the same time the voice of education tells to kill a snake whenever he sees it. he wanted to kill because if he did not he would be a coward. but he liked the snake. so the poet experience conflicting emotions for the snake.

The conflicting thoughts in the mind of the poet were

to kill the snake or not. His education told him to kill

the snake because golden snakes are poisonous. But

his heart told him not to hit the snake because he was

admiring him.
