  • Clayey soil is dense with poor aeration, less water infiltration rate but with higher water holding capacity.
  • When wet, the infiltration rate reduces and decreases the water holding capacity of clayey soil.
  • This is because of water saturation in the pores of the clayey soil.
  • Rainfall or storm causes the clay particles to form a crust on the surface and seal the top surface.
  • This will trap the water but will not allow oxygen inside which becomes highly detrimental to all the organisms surviving in the soil.
  • This also leads to flooding or pooling and runoff of excess water.
