They could also be showing them ways of killing the animals by drawing pictures on the cave walls, as hunting was the main source of food for the people then and not farming. Another reason could be, that they were maintaining a count of the hunts they made, keeping a score by drawing them on the walls.

One other reason could be, as they were exposed to only plants and animals, they were appreciating the nature and drawing them in the cave walls, out of pleasure and passing the time in the process.
