Motion is basically a change in position of a body with respect to time. The object which is not changing its position with respect to time is said to be at rest.

So ‘Kinematics’ is that branch of mechanics which deals with the motion of an object.

Actually, motion is a relative term which is defined with respect to some reference source. That source may be at rest or in motion. So we can say that one body is in motion with respect to some source while the same body is at rest with respect to some other source.

Here the child is in motion according to the stationary observer while it is at rest according to person F or M.

Types of Motion

So there are various kinds of motions such as

Linear Motion: It refers to motion along a straight line. It is also known as 1-D motion.Periodic Motion: It is a to and fro kind of motion. It repeats itself after regular intervals of time.Circular Motion: It refers to motion along a circular path. It may be uniform or non-uniform depending upon the magnitude of speed. Here velocity doesn’t remain constant during motion.S.NoDistanceDisplacement1.It is the length of actual path traveledIt is the length of shortest distance between final and initial points2.It is a scalarIt is a vector

Parameters of Motion

Equations of Motion

These equations are generally used to find the parameters of motion. In other words, we can say that they mathematically describe the physical behaviour of the system at any time.

Projectile Motion

In projectile motion, we throw an object in the air with some initial velocity in any direction. It moves freely under the effect of gravity. Here we neglect the effect of air resistance.

We can find the parameters such as time of flight, range, maximum height etc. from the below-mentioned formulas.

Relative Motion in Kinematics

In relative motion, we find the various parameters of motion such as displacement, velocity etc with respect to some reference source. Here these parameters are specifically termed as relative displacement, relative velocity etc.

Some of the examples of relative motion are shown below.

Graphs in Kinematics

We can also represent motion with the help of graphs. Here we plot the graphs between the various physical quantities (for e.g., Distance-time graph, Speed-time graph) and try to analyse the motion.

Some of the graphs commonly used in kinematics are shown below :
