1) if the intermoleculear particles are very closed. it means it's a solid
2) if the intermoleculear partiacls are having some space between them it means it is a liquid
3) if the particles have very large intermoleculear space then it is a gas

the actual volume and space ocupisation matters to determine the state of matter.
If an object have definite volume and ocuppies space then it is a solid. If an object have definite volume and does not have definite shape then it us a liquid. Lastly the gas neither have definite volume nor definite shaoe
