Sir Alexander Fleming who was a Scottish researcher accidently discovered Penicillin in 1982, the world first antibiotic. Returning from a two-week vacation, he found a mold developed on an accidently contaminated staphylococcus culture plate. He didn’t recognize the significance of the discovery for the next decade till it was labelled as the first anti-biotic for which he was also awarded Nobel prize.

Fleming's further research made people to realize that penicillin was extremely powerful as an anti-bacterial compound. Its extracts could be diluted 1000 times and still be effective in killing bacteria. Further tests was done to prove that penicillin was not toxic.
