Firstly, they felt that the narrator, Jerome was inefficient at packing and they intended to show him ‘how to do it’ right. Also, they felt that they were short on time. They only had twelve hours left before they began their journey and so, they wanted to hurry things up. The third possible reason was that they genuinely wanted to contribute to the packing part and take some responsibility.
