Answer:

After discovering that Mme Forestier`s diamond necklace was lost, Mme Loisel and her husband were really worried. They thought of buying the exact same necklace from the store but discovered that it was worth forty thousand francs, they bargained it to thirty-six thousand francs. Mme Loisel`s husband had with him eighteen thousand francs which his father had left for him and borrowed the rest of the money. Mme Loisel bought and took the necklace to her friend, Mme Forestier`s house. Although she gave Mme Forestier the necklace back, she and her  husband led a tough life. They sent away the maid, changed the lodgings and rented some rooms in an attic. Mme Loisel learned the odious work of a kitchen, washed the dishes, washed the soiled linen, their clothes and dishcloths, which she hung on the line to dry; she took down the refuse to the streets and brought up the water, stopping at each landing to catch her breath. She clothed like a woman of the people, she went to the grocer`s, the butcher's and the fruiter's, with her basket on her arm, shopping, haggling to the last of her miserable money. Her husband worked evenings, putting the books of some merchants in order, and nights he copied at five sous a page. After ten years when they had repaid their debts, Mme Loisel seemed old, had become a strong, hard woman, the crude woman of the poor household. Her hair was badly dressed, her skirts awry, her hands red, she spoke in a loud tone, and washed the floors with large pails of water.
