After sudden retrenchment due to the war, Patol Babu did a variety of odd jobs. He opened a variety store but closed that down after 5 years, he worked in a Bengali firm but left when the owner started treating him in a high-handed fashion. Then, for ten years, starting as an insurance salesman, Patol Babu tried doing many different jobs to earn his livelihood. As of late, he had been paying regular visits to a scrap iron dealer where a cousin of his had promised him a job.
