Answer:

They wanted the white man to die. Yumi refused to wash the enemy but she faced the challenge and helped her husband in washing the wounded soldier. She cooked food and fed the enemy. It was her sympathy, humanity, loyalty, faithfulness, cooperation and obedience that helped the doctor Sadao to save the prisoner.

Sadao and his wife once the white man had stopped bleeding wanted to put him back to the sea-:

  • In the chapter "The Enemy", Sadao and his wife when saw the wounded man, being a doctor Sadao wanted to treat him but that man was his enemy who had come running away from the war and if he would have saaved that man, Sadao would become a traitor. But they also thought that if they shall not save him and rather get him arrested then he would have definitely gotten killed.
  • So, the best option they thought was to put him back into the sea. But this was against the conscience of Sadao, he was a doctor and it was his moral duty to save an individual irrespective of caste, gender, nationality and etc.
  • When they decided to bring him home, their servant refused to do anything and left her job as she thought what Sadao was doing was against the country. Sadao told the servants that they brought him home only to bring him into consciousness and later shall give him to the police.
  • Sadao did his surgery and removed the bullet and both he and his wife took care of the white man until he was strong.
