the simple answer for you is that the author meant the following :-
his arm was like cheap prop used in old movies (Plastic arm used in old movies for horror effect) and acted like that only..... just like plastic arms in old movies work wierdly, when he reached for the drink (soda), he accidentally spilled his drink onto the Lady sitting near him.
