The portrait of a lady is a story wriiten by an Indian author, Khushwant Singh which describes about the author's relationship with his grandmother in his different stages of life.

The grandmother did not approve of what the narrator studied-English, Science and most disliked of all music. The grandmother was unhappy as she could no longer help the author with his lessons. As he had started learnin the rudiments of science, she became distraught at the absence of religious studies at school. She disapproved of him learning music which she considered lewd and befitting beggars and harlots. The city school gave the narrator moder education in english and science.  There was no religious instruction.
