During World War 1, the demand for wheat increased and the white Americans cleared more and more lands for wheat cultivation and USA became the bread basket of the world. After the World War 1 ended, there was a large surplus and unsold stocks piled up. Exports declined and Wheat prices fell.
In the 1930s, dust storms began to blow over the southern plains. Black blizzards rolled in. They came frequently through the 1930s. Cattle and birds died and people were blinded by the dust storms. When wheat cultivation yielded huge returns, the zealous farmers uprooted all vegetation, destroyed the forests, and the entire region turned into a dust bowl.
Because of the destruction of natural vegetation, the rains failed and the years of 1930s were full of drought and temperatures increased. This turned the ordinary dust storms into black blizzards. After the 1930s, the settlers of the realized that they had to respect the nature, environment and ecology of each region.
