They worked hard the whole day doing odd jobs to save money for the payment of hospital bills. They did not spend anything on themselves and saved every penny they earned. they did odd jobs like selling wild strawberries, newspapers, polishing shoes,taking tourists to various monumental places like  Juliet's Tomb and etc.Their mom and dad died earlier during civil war due to which they were without a shed over their head due to which they need to survive in cold weather which caused their sister tuberculosis of spine. Both Nicola and Jacopo worked so that their sister could get well again.
