United Nations General Assembly declared 2017 as the International Year of Sustainable Tourism for Development.

The declaration was made to give an opportunity to the tourism sector to contribute to the three pillars of sustainability - economic, social and environmental. It also aimed at raising the awareness of the true dimensions of the tourism sector which is often undervalued. 
Global leaders have recognized that if tourism is well-designed and well-managed it can contribute to job creation, trade and to the three dimensions of sustainable development.
