MOST OF HE WOMEN OF THE 3rd ESTATE WERE WORKING FOR THEIR LIVING. THEY WORKED AS LAUNDRESS, STEAMS TRESSES, OR SOLD FLOWERS, FRUITS, VEGETABLES AT THE MARKET, OR WERE EMPLOYED AS DOMESTIC SERVANTS.
WORKING WOMEN ALSO HAD TO TAKE CARE OF THEIR FAMILIES i; COOK FOOD, FETCH WATER, QUEUE UP FOR BREAD, LOOK AFTER THEIR CHILDREN. THEIR WAGES WERE LOW COMPARED TO THOSE OF MEN.

The women of France played an active role in the French Revolution from the very beginning inspite of them being labelled as passive citizens by the Constitution of 1791. Although women had no formal education and had to work as seamstress, laundresses and household workers. They started many clubs and newspapers to demand for various rights ranging from equal wages to right to vote. They also played a crucial role in supporting the families and taking care of children while men were involved in initial phase of revolution.

In the early years, the revolutionary government did introduce laws that helped improve the lives of women. Together with the creation of state schools, schooling was made compulsory for all the girls. Their fathers could no longer force them into marriage against their will. Marriage was made into a contract entered freely and registered under civil law. Divorce was made legal, and could be applied for both by men and women. Women could now train for jobs, could become artists or run small businesses.
