van helmenton wanted to prove plants use material from the soil to plants use materials from the soil to perform photosynthesis. so he performed an experiment where he took a plot of soil and a Willie seedling and weighed the pot of soil and a willow tree separately after 5 years of performing photosynthesis he took the tree out and weighed it.

As the weight of the soil had hardly changed, Van Helmont concluded that plant growth can't only be due to minerals from the soil.....but also from carbondioxide
