What did we get as inheritance from British rulers and what were the challenges before the country at the eve of independence?

Though the British rule had serious drawbacks, in some dirction their rule proved to be beneficial. Under their rule, basic infrastructure such as railways, water transport etc. develop in India. They also undertook the construction of some important roads, introduced English language and Education in India and moreover their rule helped in unification of India. In short, the colonial regime helped Indians to break the geographical and cultural barriers prevailing amongst the people of India.
