Synapsis is a word for the association of similar chromosomes often found in the first meiotic prophase. (Meiosis is the splitting of a cell into four daughter cells which each have half the chromosomes as the parent cell.) A synapse is the space between nerve cells where signals pass from one to the other.

Synapsis-Synapsis is a phenomenon that takes place during prophase 1 of meiosis 1. During synapsis, homologous chromosomes come together and line up side by side forming a tetrad.
Synapses-A synapse is the link between one neuron and another. There is no physical contact between one neuron and the next. Instead there is a tiny gap called the synaptic cleft. The gap in the synapses is called synaptic cleft
