Structurally, if you compare an artery and a vein of the same diameter, the artery has more elastic and muscular tissue and a thicker wall than a vein. When emptied of blood, a medium to large artery retains its round shape whereas a vein collapses into a more ribbonlike or irregular shape.

Medium-size veins in the limbs, and to a slight extent in the abdomen, have one-way valves, shaped somewhat like shirt pockets; arteries never do.

Functionally, they differ in the direction of blood flow relative to the heart or the nearest capillary bed; in blood pressure; and in the level of oxygen in the blood they transport.
