Dear Brother:
I hope this letter finds you healthy, wealthy, and enjoying your life. In this letter, as was asked by you, I am going to share with you a few of the hardships I had to face to win equality for colored people.
I was pretty happy as a child and did not find anything wrong around me until I became young. As a child I enjoyed all the freedom of running in the fields, swimming in the clear stream that ran through my village, roasting mealies under the stars, and riding the broad backs of slow-moving bulls.
When I became a little younger, I realized I did not have all the freedom. The white people had imposed many restrictions on me and the other colored people. Then achieving total freedom from the evil of apartheid became my prime motive of survival. I just wanted to live like a common man and enjoy the common blessings of life, but racial oppression deprived of this joy.
Then I fought against this freedom. Stayed in jail. However, finally my entire race and I got freedom on May 10, 1994; I was so happy that day. So you see this freedom that the younger generations enjoy was attained with many sacrifices. You must remember it. That’s all for now. God bless you.
Yours affectionately,
Nelson Mandela
