Megalithic graves

Some graves of the late Chalcolithic and early Iron Age are marked by megalithic structures. Megaliths were large stone graves in which the dead were buried along with the person's belongings such as weapons, jewellery, tools, utensils, and even coins. These graves were of different shapes and sizes. Megaliths or stone graves have been found m Kashmir, north-eastern India, Tekkalakota, and Brahmagiri in the Deccan, and the

southernmost parts of India. The study of these graves has helped historians to understand a lot about the culture and society during those times. There are different types of megalithic burials in the urn burials, the bones of the dead were put na pot or um The urn was then buned in a pit, usually surrounded by a circle of stones.

These were then covered by a flat stone. In some Ancient buta pon graves, the body was placed flat on a wooden board and lowered into open put A stone circle was then built around it Such graves came to be known as pit circle graves Some graves were built in the shape of an enclosed tomb. These were known as cist graves They were made of granite slabs, surrounded by a circle of stones, and covered with a flat stone

Analysis of the graves

A study of all these graves has helped the historians form an idea of the lives of the peopleliving during those times. Besides the skeletons, all these graves had some common objects that were buried. These included black and red ware, copper and gold objects, iron tools, and weapons. So, people perhaps believed that the dead might need these objects in their afterlife. The graves and the objects they contain form an important part of study for historians. It tells them about the social and economic status of the person buried. At Tekkalakota and Brahmagiri sites in Karnataka, iron tools, weapons, and the remains of horses have been found. One interesting observation is that the weapons found there outnumber the tools, which shows that the people were perhaps engaged more in hunting and gathering than in cultivating. The burials from the megalithic sites in South India point towards the fact that people mostly lived on the hills.
