In the age of the Internet, information is at our beck and call with the push of a button. Smartphones are no exception, making it easier to get up to the second news and information. It’s almost like carrying a laptop around in your pocket.

Usually, high school graduates view purchasing a laptop a must before heading off to college. Now I’m not saying that laptops aren’t still important, because they are, but smartphones can be equally as beneficial.

One feature that’s extremely helpful is having email on your phone. Sometimes a professor sends an email cancelling class at the last minute, but if you aren’t in your room to check your email on your computer, you wouldn’t have any idea. As a university student, your inbox is constantly filling up with information from the school or student organizations. In college, email is the primary mode of communication for students. Being able to access all the information on your university email at all times is a huge advantage as well as a convenience.

College students practically live on social media websites such as Facebook and Twitter. Having sites like these at your fingertips is a definite plus in keeping up with the lives of your friends and followers. A less obvious advantage of social media is getting the news as it’s breaking, but before it is reported on.

I know, you’re thinking that I’m crazy, but some serious stories have been broken on Twitter. Take the death of Osama bin Laden, for example. John Hudson from “The Atlantic Wire” reported that a man from the town where bin Laden was killed had been tweeting about the helicopter that flew in when Osama was killed.

On a lighter note, Ohio University’s Vice President of Student Affairs announced first on Twitter that Wiz Khalifa would be coming to the university to perform in May as the spring concert.

The State of the News Media 2011 reported that in December 2010, 41% of Americans said that they get their news from the Internet. The number increased from 24% to 41% in just one year.

Based on these numbers, it’s reasonable for one to conclude that Internet will continue to be the choice of consumers for news. This is just another reason why smartphones are almost a must-have for college students everywhere.

With the constantly changing schedules of college students, smartphones are an easy way to stay on top of things. The usefulness of smartphones doesn’t diminish the demand for a laptop, after all you can’t write a paper on your phone. However, with the shift in media to Internet, taking a smartphone to college gives the student a definite advantage.
