Doctrine of Lapse means during British era, the British could annex any kingdom on the plea that the ruler did not had a natural heir. It was initiated by Lord Dalhousie........ The state of Jhansi was annexed in this manner........... :)

Doctrine of lapse is the policy introduced by the British in which the kingdoms whose kings have died and the queen has adopted a heir were taken from the Royal family directly without considering the adopted heir .
