Food is mentioned in Sanskrit using various words:-

अन्नम् (Annam)

आहारम् (Aaharam)

खाद्यम् (Khaadyam)

भक्ष्यम् (Bhakshyam)

व्यंजनम् (Vyanjanam)

खाद्यपदार्थम् (Khaadyapdaartham)

But the most commonly used word for food is भोजनम् (Bhojanam).

The great poet Kalidasa[1]has a story where he completes a wonderful verse regarding food and the word used there is भोजनम्.

भोजनं देहि राजेन्द्र घृतसूपसमन्वितम् ।

माहिषं च शरच्चन्द्रचन्द्रिकाधवलं दधि ॥[2]

There is a funny story involving the great poet Kalidasa and some lesser talented poets who wanted to get big at Raja Bhoja’s court. These lesser poets were struggling for survival, and so out of desperation they decided one day to just go up to the king and compose a poem about food. They hoped that the king would be impressed with their poem and hire them in his court. But given their mediocre talent, they couldn’t really come up with anything fancy. All they had was this:

भोजनं देहि राजेन्द्र घृतसूपसमन्वितं

Transliteration:- bhojanam dehi rAjendra ghRta-sUpa-samanvitam

Translation :-O king, please give us food served with ghee and sambhar.

This wasn’t even a full stanza, and they didn’t know how to complete it. So they went to Kalidasa himself for help. Kalidasa completed the second half of verse like this:

माहिषं च शरच्चन्द्रचन्द्रिकाधवलं दधि

Transliteration :- mAhiSham ca sharaccandracandrikAdhavalam dadhi

Translation:- And with yogurt made from buffalo’s milk and as white as the full moon on an autumn night.

When the poets presented this verse to the king, he immediately recognized the second line as being that of Kalidasa, and punished the poets for plagiarism.
