2. cupric oxide is treated with dilute sulphuric acid and then a solution of sodium hydroxide is added​

1)Concentrated H2SO4 is added to sugar that forms carbon, steam, and sulfur dioxide. The concentrated H2SO4 is added for dehydration of the sugar to obtain carbon and water. The water gets vapourised due to the heat of the reaction thus forming a column of carbon.
