The revenue system during the sultanate period is called Iqta system.

In this system, nobles or other officers were given land grants instead of paying him a salary. It is the main source of income of the Delhi sultans. The grant was not heredity but when the central authority became weak, the grant began to be regarded as heredity. Officers collect taxes from people who are working on his lands. Officers were also responsible for maintaining law and order in the territory from which he collected the revenue.

In the beginning, an Iqta was based upon salary, later under Firoz Shah Tughluq, it became heredity.
