Terai Region is a swampy area in India and Nepal, in the southern foothills of the Himalayas, in the northeast of the Indo-Gangetic plain. The Terai forms a strip 30 to 50 km wide at an elevation of up to 900 m. It is covered with jungles, which consist of sal trees, bamboo, magnolias, orchids, and lianas. A considerable part is covered with silt and overgrown with tall grasses. Some parts have been drained and planted with rice and other crops. The swampiness of the Terai is due to excessive precipitation, abundant groundwater, and poor drainage of the submontane plains.
